Seattle USA Port Schedule

seattle cruise ship schedule

“Thanks to our successful approach in combating the pandemic, our region is finally on the cusp of the tourism recovery we have been hoping for. A strong 2022 cruise season will be a gift to our region and it is encouraging to see the cruise industry’s commitment to Seattle and the Alaska cruise market,” said Tom Norwalk, President and CEO of Visit Seattle. In 2023 (April-October) the Port received 291 ship calls and 1,778 million passengers. Since 2024, Pier 66's dock provides shore power connectivity/cold ironing. Shore-to-ship power capability allows berthed ships to shut down their engines and plug into the city's electrical grid for all shipboard equipment and hotel services, thus reducing in-port noise and air pollution. The Port of Seattle keeps rising to the top as far as cruise ports are concerned, and it is a great area to visit before or following your cruise vacation.

Waterfront Wonders

For 2020 was forecasted a record year with scheduled 225 ship calls and estimated ~1,4 million passengers. The 15-year lease to NCL (until 2032) is estimated to generate over USD 2,3 billion in total revenue, nearly 900 jobs and over USD 65 million in taxes. 2017 was a record year for the cruise port - with handled 218 ship calls and nearly 1,072 million passengers (9% increase over 2016's 983,539 pax) and total revenue USD 501 million. On August 12, 2015, the seaport signed a 15-year lease deal with NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings). The deal secured all NCLH ships (NCL, Oceania and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas) in Port Seattle for the full term of the lease of Bell Street Terminal (Pier 66). The guaranteed passenger volume was estimated to bring ~USD 73 million of revenue to the cruise port.

Terminal Directions and Parking

NCL's USD 30 million investment into Pier 66 allowed in Seattle to be homeported the ever-largest Alaskan ship - Norwegian Bliss. The liner started turnaround (roundtrip itinerary) operations in June 2018 with 7-day Inside Passage cruises. To handle new ship's capacity (5200 passengers, 1730 crew), Terminal 66 was expanded from 44,000 ft2 (4090 m2) to 151,000 ft2 (14030 m2). On May 23, 2017, representatives from Port Seattle and NCLH-Norwegian celebrated the opening of the newly renovated Pier 66 Terminal. Upgrades included a mobile gangway (passenger boarding bridge), renovated check-in area and VIP lounge. During season 2019 (April-October), the cruise port handled 211 ship calls and ~1,2 million passengers (1,114 million were handled in 2018).

In early-April 2016, Port Seattle announced plans to ease flight-cruise passengers at Sea-Tac Airport by temporarily replacing TSA security staff with contractors. Starting May 2016, TSA staff was trained locally to increase the number of processed cruisers at the airport. During the Port's inaugural cruise season (1999) were handled only 6 ship calls and 6615 passengers. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site.

The new facility can handle ULCV (ultra-large container vessels/boxships), supports ~6600 direct jobs and generates USD 2+ billion in annual business activities. From the US$ 340M, the private company SSA Terminals (subsidiary of SSA Marine Inc) contributed US$ 160M. The 185-acre (75-hectares) terminal will be open in 2 phases - one berth in 2021-Q1, and the other in 2023. Terminal 5 can handle simultaneously 2 large boxships (max capacity 18,000 TEU-containers). Port Seattle's North and South harbor container terminals can handle ships with max capacity 14,000 TEUs. With no cruise activity in 2020, the economic losses due to the drop in tourism were devastating locally and in Alaska.

During your Seattle cruise vacation, head to Ballard Avenue NW for hip boutiques, and shop for big brands downtown. Since 2019, Terminal 46 is no longer used for international container shipping. It currently has 2 passenger terminals - "Terminal 91" and "Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal" (aka "Pier 66"), plus 1 new/planned (Pier 46). Fishermen's Terminal (on Salmon Bay) is the homeport (dock) for Washington state's North Pacific Fishing Fleet (commercial fishing vessels). In late-November 2018, Port Seattle's Terminal 18 (operated by SSA Marine Inc) surpassed the 1 million TEU-container volume.

The seven major brands homeporting in Seattle will be sailing 14 vessels, up from 11 most seasons. Currently, Port's cruise business generates 5500+ jobs and annually ~USD 450 million in revenue (~USD 900M total economic activities) plus ~USD 15M in local and state taxes. Each Seattle-homeported cruise liner call generates USD 2,5+ million for the local economy. Every spring and summer, travelers from around the country and across the world flock to the Seattle waterfront to board cruise ships bound for Alaska. Later this spring, the Port, cruise lines, and tourism partners will host a pre-season webinar to answer community questions about the upcoming cruise season.

Statistical data shows that an average turnaround cruise tourist spends USD 1547 in the city (on hotels/lodging, dining/drinking, transportation, shopping). Cruise companies' spending includes in-port marine services and also purchasing supplies from local suppliers, including seafood, fresh produce (fruits, vegetables, flowers, eggs), butter, wines. When the Port of Seattle kicked off plans to develop a new cruise ship facility on the Seattle waterfront, we were faced with a challenge. There are two cruise ship terminals – Bell Street Cruise Terminal and Smith Cove Cruise Terminal. If you're a passenger who is planning to embark on an adventure this season or just want to plan ahead for crowds along the waterfront and downtown Seattle, here's what to expect.

The 15-year lease deal was estimated to generate USD 2+ billion in business revenue, ~900 new jobs, USD 65+ million in local and state taxes. In 2015, the cruise port handled 192 ship calls and 895,055 passengers. Port Seattle's cruise passenger shipping business started in 1999 and is currently ranked first among all West Coast USA homeports (departure seaports). Each homeported ship's visit generates USD 4+ million for Washington State's economy, with annual regional revenue USD 0,9+ billion. The city's best-known landmark is The Space Needle observation tower in downtown (height 184 m / 604 ft), having 6 floors (top floor heigth 158 m / 518 ft) and 3 lifts. Construction works on Pier 46's "Terminal 5" started on March 13, 2019.

Cruise lines are always vying to offer itineraries in this buzzing port. Some people think of Seattle as a rainy and dreary city, but records show the city actually gets less rain than New York and Miami. Located in between Puget Sound and Washington Harbor, Seattle has tons of activities for water lovers and outdoor enthusiasts and make sure to grab a cup of coffee, because this is the home of Starbucks. Cruise lines are adding additional ships to the Alaska market this season. It is anticipated that the number of passengers per ship will vary by sailing and will increase as the season progresses.

French Navy Conducts Synchronized Cruise Missile Strikes

On Jan 29, it said the claimed flight time was an exaggeration, saying it tracked the missiles in real time and also played down the possibility that it was propelled by solid fuel. South Korea's military said on Sunday that the North fired multiple cruise missiles off its coast but did not provide details. On Monday, it said the claimed flight time was an exaggeration saying it tracked the missiles real time and also played down the possibility it was propelled by solid fuel. The historic test took place yesterday (18 April 2024) and involved first ship-in-class Aquitaine (D650) and a Suffren-class nuclear powered submarine (SSN). The frigate was located off Britany while the SSN was cruising in the Bay of Biscay. The two naval cruise missiles simultaneously hit a target located at the DGA’s missile test center South of Bordeaux.

North Korea says it has tested submarine-launched cruise missiles

Navy service—vessels that are usually tasked with top-priority clandestine missions. Subsequently, two larger diesel submarines of the Grayback-class were purpose built for the carriage of the Regulus missile, with each capable of accommodating up to four missiles, while a further boat, the nuclear-powered USS Halibut, could carry up to five missiles. Between September 1959 and July 1964, the five Regulus missile boats undertook deterrent patrols in the Pacific Ocean,[2] in concert with the newly commissioned George Washington-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) in the Atlantic, until sufficient SSBNs were in service to replace them. But at the dawn of the Cold War, it became clear that nuclear missiles would decide future world conflicts.

Naval Station Mayport, Jacksonville, Florida

Multiple safety mechanisms are in place to deactivate the missile if it fails to get away from the sub. The amazing amount of engineering and science that goes into launching an underwater Trident missile into low-Earth orbit. Eleven Project 949A Antey submarines were completed at Severodvinsk, of which five were assigned to the Soviet Northern Fleet. At one stage it had been planned to develop a new fourth-generation follow-on to the Project 949A, but this plan was later dropped. The external differences between the two classes were that the 949A class is about 10 metres (33 ft) longer than its predecessor (approximately 154 metres, 505 ft rather than 143 m, 469 ft), providing space and buoyancy for improved electronics and quieter propulsion.

Transwing Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) UAS, US

The report came a day after South Korea’s military said it detected North Korea firing multiple cruise missiles over waters near the eastern port of Sinpo, where the North has a major shipyard developing submarines. It was the latest in a streak of weapons demonstrations by North Korea amid increasing tensions with the United States, South Korea and Japan. North Korea said on Monday that it had fired two strategic cruise missiles from a submarine, its first such missile test, as South Korea and the United States were about to begin a major joint military exercise. “Arming such vessels with nuclear cruise missiles would also reduce the number of conventional missiles each boat could carry, at a time when Pentagon leaders argue that strengthening conventional deterrence is their top priority in the Asia-Pacific,” says Reif. In 1947, the United States launched a JB-2 Loon, a direct copy of the German V-1, was launched from the deck of the submarine USS Cusk. This test proved it could be done, but the Cusk used an unpolished, jerry-rigged system.

Finding Its Target

Kim called the test a success, KCNA said, "which is of strategic significance in carrying out the plan...for modernizing the army which aims at building a powerful naval force." It is believed that this trial launch targeted US military bases in Japan, especially the ones in Okinawa, judging by the distance it has travelled. Concerns for this new SLCM are already on the horizon, as it gives North Korea more flexibility in delivering their retaliatory nuclear power to its adversaries when attacked. South Korea’s JCS (Joint Chiefs of Staff) also released a statement earlier this morning that it detected two missile launches near the northeastern coastal city of Sinpo, while declining to release more details about the launch. However, JCS denounced North Korea’s SLCM launch as ‘premature’ and ‘early-stage’, adding that Pyongyang would have exaggerated the significance of such weapon system only to threat its neighboring South and Washington.

AUKUS Underwater Capability Developments Target Torpedo-tube UUV System

Raytheon was contracted to integrate the upgraded navigation and communication systems into the Block IV Tactical Tomahawk (TACTOM) missile in March 2020. State news agency KCNA and official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said on Jan 29 the missiles flew above the sea off the country’s east coast for 7,421 seconds and 7,445 seconds and hit an unspecified island target, indicating the flight time exceeded two hours. In recent months, the North has tested an array of weapons that include ballistic missile systems that are under development and an underwater drone.

Six years after the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review recommended a nuclear armed sea-launched cruise missile (SLCM-N) to counter the growing Russian and Chinese nuclear threat, the program is finally underway, according to recent congressional testimony by administration officials. By authorizing and funding the SLCM-N, Congress took a very important step toward bolstering nuclear deterrence in an increasingly dangerous world. But it must now pay attention to how the Department of Defense executes its decision in the coming years. In the current case, the Florida was apparently forward-deployed to the Middle East because the Russia-focused mission of the George H. W. Bush Carrier Strike Group in the East Mediterranean has been extended. Low-flying Tomahawks are difficult to detect and counter, especially if launched from submerged SSGNs.

Coming In For a (Destructive) Landing

NCM provides a unique operational capability, with very long range high-precision strike against politically/military sensitive targets. The missile has been designed for vertical launch from the compact A70 SYLVER vertical launcher which is also capable of housing other MBDA missiles such as the ASTER family of air defence missiles. NCM has also been designed to be launched from the 21 inch torpedo tubes of a submerged submarine. Conventionally armed BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles are the mainstay of the Navy’s arsenal for attacking land targets.

Leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test of the missile, called "Pulhwasal-3-31," which is identical to the strategic cruise missiles that the North test-launched last week as part of upgrading its weapons system. Notably, all four SSGNs are slated for retirement between 2026 and 2028, with no replacement in sight. Until then, however, the prospect of 154 Tomahawks causing massive damage inside Iran could send a powerful message, since the regime is obviously much more sensitive to potential strikes on its home territory versus far away in Syria. With a vessel like the USS Florida in theater, Iran’s monitoring capabilities and cruise missile defenses along these vast and remote borders could be stretched quite thin (for a more detailed discussion of the regime’s air defense, including graphics, see PolicyWatch 3626). Designed and produced by MBDA, the Naval Cruise Missile is deployed from FREMM frigates since 2017 and more recently from the new Suffren-class submarines. Known as MdCN in French, the missile offers France a sovereign power projection capacity.

The advantage that the submarines have over guided-missile destroyers and cruisers is the ability to remain undetected and launch while submerged. Tomahawk was deployed on US Navy attack submarines beginning in 1983, originally in LACM and ASCM versions, but the ASCM version was withdrawn in the 1990s. Congress will be instrumental in the Department of Defense finding the sweet spot among requirements, costs, and operations. Analysis has been done to show that the SLCM-N’s contribution to nuclear deterrence can be made at these shorter ranges. Interestingly, Tehran is eyeing a stealthy submarine launch capability of its own. Since at least 2019, the Iranian national navy has been developing and testing a canister-based system for launching Nasr antiship missiles from submarine torpedo tubes; these missiles now have a reported range of around 100 km.

Successfully launched by the USS George Washington, this missile was a revolutionary development because it allowed a boomer, another name for a ballistic missile submarine, to remain submerged. Subsequent missiles have all been refinements of the same basic design, invisible and unstoppable. Submarines couldn't always launch airborne missiles from under the sea, of course. During both World Wars, submarines were armed with torpedoes and deck-mounted guns—heavy cannons for engaging surface ships and lighter anti-aircraft weapons. Mine-laying submarines also terrorized the sea in the first half of the 20th century.

The missiles were launched at dawn on Sunday and flew for more than two hours, covering a distance of 932 miles, according to the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency. The report said they were fired from the 8.24 Yongung, the only submarine capable of launching missiles that North Korea is known to possess. The latest version of the submarine has the new Virginia Payload Module; in addition to the basic 12 cruise missile launch tubes, the VPM caries and launches up to 28 additional cruise missiles.

The Tomahawk Block IV missile is powered by a Williams International F415 cruise turbo-fan engine and ARC MK 135 rocket motor. The Block Va variants will be named Maritime Strike and have the capability of hitting a moving target. South Korea’s military said the submarine unveiled by North Korea in September, the “Hero Kim Kun Ok,” did not look ready for operational duty and suggested the North was exaggerating its capabilities. The North announced the launch as South Korea and the United States were beginning an 11-day joint military exercise on Monday.

Heres All to Know About the New Carnival Jubilee

All the signature features from the XL Class are also making a return onboard the Carnival Jubilee, including the BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster. When passengers step into Currents, they will be transported to “mesmerizing underwater worlds,” the company added, in a space that changes from day to night and throughout the cruise. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

I tried Carnival's older cruise ships and never want to go back

In addition to the vintage references, a well-executed ocean theme is carried throughout the ship. It starts with The Atlantic and The Pacific, the names of Carnival Jubilee's two main dining rooms. They feature light fixtures befitting the Great Hall at Hogwarts Castle and look as if they contain water bubbles. The vessel's original bell and ship plaque, both from 1986, are on display. Also, the boat that's positioned as a photo spot in the new Jubilee's The Shores zone bears the original Jubilee's hull number, 0717, as the fake registration number on its hull.

Casual dining

Cabins in this section of the ship come in several configurations to suit different needs, and they include access to a dedicated lounge, allowing families to spend time together over snacks, drinks and even board games. On the final day of the cruise, more than 1,600 crew members gathered for a pep rally and group photo on the Lido Deck in matching Carnival jackets the line had specially made for the occasion. Until then, the sheer number of people required to keep a ship of Carnival Jubilee's size running smoothly hadn't fully registered. Also scheduled are events that will allow you to make your own fish, which can be seen swimming by on the screens. And, throughout each sailing, passengers will have at least one chance to see the screens pulsating along, synthesizer style, to music that will play in the Currents corridor. At set times, you can head up one deck — via a staircase with a glittering blue wall that evokes the ocean, offset by a suspended school of swimming fish — to a kiosk that allows you to change the location.

STATEROOM DESIGN

Then there's the Lido Deck, which features amber, orange and lime green accents, wooden latticework, faux palm trees and vintage smokestacks that will have you thinking you magically woke up in the wrong century. Additionally, it features BOLT, the Ultimate Speed Coaster, which is the first-ever roller coaster on a ship. The 183,900-ton ship will also be slightly larger, with capacity for 5,400 passengers.

Carnival Jubilee – 2023

Following the success of Mardi Gras, Carnival Cruise Line built Carnival Celebration in 2022 and Carnival Jubilee in 2023. Such a massive ship could easily accommodate as many as 7,000 guests and 2,500 crew members – or more. The estimated price tag for each vessel could be as high as $1.6 billion or more, with a speculated four ships to be ordered together in the series for a contract worth nearly $7 billion. Paradise Plaza features a rainbow-colored walkway through a sunshine entranceway with a 10-story “Suncastle” as a centerpiece. The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities, including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions.

The new port of call will be featured on both 3- and 4-night sailings. Carnival Glory will welcome her first post-dry-dock guests on Thursday, April 18 at embarkation in Barcelona as she sets sail on a 14-night transatlantic cruise to return to Florida. Of particular note are ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act – upgrades.

Carnival Glory has departed the shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, following her extensive dry dock renovation. The ship entered dry dock on March 24, 2024, and her time out of service has been put to amazingly good use to refresh the 21-year-old vessel. A nine-day round-trip cruise from New York to the Bahamas departing on Feb. 2, 2024, starts at $449 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival's website, though prices vary by itinerary, stateroom, and other factors. The fare includes most food, drinks like iced tea and regular coffee and more. I loved how the atrium area is now more incorporated into the daily flow of the ship, rather than an area you pass by to get somewhere else.

This poolside bar on Mardi Gras® spans two decks and transports you right to the land of Tiki. But the views aren’t all that matters here — Ocean View staterooms on Carnival Celebration® are a little bit bigger than Interior rooms and most feature a supremely loungeable couch for those times when neither lying nor standing will do. But the views aren’t all that matters here — Ocean View staterooms on Carnival Jubilee™ are a little bit bigger than Interior rooms and most feature a supremely loungeable couch for those times when neither lying nor standing will do. She will be the newest ship in the Excel class, Carnival Jubilee will share many of the same features guests love on Mardi Gras – including the award-winning BOLT, The Ultimate Sea Coaster. She will also feature unique experiences and signature venues of her own. Guests can enjoy pizza at Coastal Slice or try a sandwich or hot dog at Beach Buns.

And any time you’re in your well-appointed Balcony stateroom aboard Carnival Jubilee™, you’re just steps away from the outdoors by way of your private open-air oasis. According to the cruise line, the new mega-ship will measure 180,000 gross tons. The ship’s capacity will be similar to other Excel-class ships, holding over 6,400 guests. The cruise line also confirmed that the new vessel will also feature cutting-edge innovation, as it will be powered by LNG, or liquified natural gas. If your group likes to sail a little closer to the waves — or just in a calm location at the aft of the ship — choose a Family Harbor Cove Balcony stateroom. You’ll find your outpost a wave-watcher’s paradise… and while we can’t promise, you just might catch a living, swimming marine biology lesson from your railing!

With a capacity of 5,282 passengers based on double occupancy, it is named after a former Carnival cruise ship that sailed for two decades. The Miss Dominican Republic, Kimberly Jiménez, is the ship’s godmother. The ship will feature the cruise line’s new Carnival Fun Italian Style experience, which debuts with the June 2023 arrival of Carnival Venezia in New York.

The 3,002 passenger ship is currently 102,853 gross tons after the remodel. In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line gave the cruise ship a massive $200 million renovation and a name change to Carnival Sunrise. The vessel originally debuted in 1999 and was the second Destiny class ship. The first Dream class ship from Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Dream was the first Carnival ship to be over 120,000 gross tons in size. The ship, which can accommodate nearly 5,000 guests, will spend the summer sailing four-, five-, six- and eight-day cruises to Bermuda, the Caribbean, New England and Canada.

things to do on a cruise

While it can be expensive (expect to spend $20-30 per day), there are often “social media” packages available for cheaper. If you’re online, then snap a few poolside selfies to post to Facebook, Instagram, or send back home to let everyone know you’re enjoying your vacation. While there will be tables in the game room, don’t think you are stuck playing there. If you have kids (or you’re a kid at heart), don’t miss spending some time in the arcade on the ship. They feature games ranging from air hockey to racing to shooting genres, and you can play them all with a swipe of your keycard. To still utilize this space, the cruise lines often show feature films on the big screen that overlooks the deck.

Stock Up Your Liquor Cabinet With Duty-Free Shopping

Sometimes it’s free soft-serve, other ships might have gelato that costs a few bucks. When it comes to things to do on a cruise, not too many people consider working out. That’s a shame because cruise ships offer some of the best gym facilities you’ll find.

One of the World’s Largest Cruise Ships That Nobody Is Talking About (Yet)

You can learn about their history and culture at the Sitka National Historical Park and Sheldon Jackson Museum of Native Alaskan art. Wildlife enthusiasts might want to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, or go bird- and bear-watching. Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage. Many people trek to Alaska to commune with nature, but there's also history here that you shouldn't overlook. You'll find magnificent mountains (often snowcapped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers.

Score Big in a Blackjack Tournament

A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver. If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own. Cell phone service and normal wifi plans won’t work the same way on a cruise.

Fun: Sing, Shop, Skate – and More!

It's located on the opposite side of the island, which is about a 40-minute drive from the Barbados cruise port, so we recommend planning the day and renting a vehicle or booking a taxi. The eco-adventure park has other fun activities like zip lines, nature trails, a bird aviary, rum-tasting and more. You’ll find Bottom Bay about a 45-minute drive from the cruise port, another beautiful beach.

That way, there's no way that I can be surprised by an unexpected charge. Plus, you'll want to save room in your suitcase for all the little treasures you're going to find along the way. As the head of The Points Guy's cruise content team, I get these sorts of questions all the time.

things to do on a cruise

Rainy days are perfect days to attend an afternoon showing of a popular production show or even a movie in the ship’s theatre or one of the lounges. You don’t need to wait for a rainy day to attend an art auction, but if you are looking for something to do, why not give it a try? If you enjoy art and learning about the history of some well known and up and coming artists, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Video: What to Do on Cruise Sea Days

Sing along as a pianist plays all your favorite barroom tunes at Schooner Bar. Or raise a glass as the Rising Tide Bar gently elevates you three decks up. And end the night on a high note with a karaoke session at On Air Club. Enjoy an evening of elegance with formal nightsIf the elegance of cruising’s past makes you feel you were born too late, you’ll love this opportunity to wear your finest attire. Formal nights happen on each cruise and are perfect to get all dressed up and have a romantic evening. Be sure to take a photo so you can show all your friends back home how amazing you look on this special evening at sea.

Excursions

You also don't have to go hunting for a restaurant every night. There usually are a bunch just steps away from your cabin with tables waiting for you. Need to reboot and find your center in between thrilling onboard experiences? Indulge in holistic remedies, revitalizing massages, and groundbreaking exercise classes and facilities at Vitality Spa and Fitness. Enjoy poolside beverages at Lime and CoconutPerhaps the most popular bar on any Royal Caribbean ship will be Lime and Coconut. Here you can get all the fruity tropical concoctions you’re dreaming about, all with barely having to leave your sun lounger.

Most cruises aren't this way — at least if you want to get the most out of them. At the heart of most cruises are port calls that, in many cases, are very short — often just a few hours. You want to have a plan for what to do in these ports or you'll miss out on a big part of the cruising experience. There's nothing more jammed than a cruise ship buffet on embarkation day. To avoid the first-day buffet crowds, head to whatever secondary dining option is available.

Lunchtime options range from sandwiches, salads, and soups to fresh-pressed paninis and various carving stations. For dinner, you can eat just about anything you can imagine, including salads, burgers, dogs, tacos, chicken, and beef dishes. Don’t forget to save room for the dessert, which include a number of options. Dine on gourmet Italian fare at Jaime’s ItalianWith a menu of Tuscan specialties designed by famed chef Jaime Oliver, Jaime’s Italian is a favorite dining venue among Royal Caribbean fans. Start with the Meat Plank, the shareable appetizer piled with mortadella, salami, prosciutto, pickles and cheeses.

Expect at least a couple amazing production shows performed by the cruise ship’s singers and dancers. Unfortunately not every day on a cruise will be sunshine and blue skies. However there’s still so much to do on rainy days on a cruise. Have a romantic dinner for 2 in the main dining room or one of the wonderful specialty restaurants. Celebrity’s Tuscan Grill offers a very special dinner and experience. Here are some of the best cruise activities for couples to enjoy.

Per-day pricing is reasonable on popular lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival, while others still operate on a per-minute fee basis. Speeds are never the same as they are on land, but ships are more connected now than ever before. Both a rite of passage for new cruisers and a favorite event for old salts, sailaway is what officially kicks off each voyage. Join fellow passengers and crew on the upper outdoor decks for music, dancing and drinks to mark the beginning of a great vacation, along with spectacular views -- of the sunset if you're lucky.

Fly one way and skip the Drake Passage to dive, snorkel and kayak sooner. After 2 hours of flying, be cruising the White Continent on Antarctica's first flight and adventure cruise combination. Experience an Antarctic cruise in only 8 days without crossing the Drake Passage, or choose alternate routes visiting South Georgia with only a one-way Drake crossing. Even while on board, there are regular lectures with a big focus on wildlife, in addition to topics like climate change or going over what the expedition groups experienced that day. Those who cruise with Holland America often typically enjoy the line’s point-to-point itineraries (as opposed to round-trip cruises). In Antarctica, the line sails 22-night cruises between San Antonio, Chile and Buenos Aires, with four full days in Antarctic waters. Added highlights include cruising Chilean fjords and ports of calls in Chile. Our day of walking atop fast ice in Lallemand Fjord came fewer than 72 hours after departing Ushuaia, Argentina, the hub for most Antarctica-bound expedition cruise vessels.

Fly & Cruise Antarctica

This is a great time to pack, browse through your photos, edit, read, and relax. Take some time to truly appreciate the extraordinary adventure you just had and make sure to celebrate with people you met along the way at the farewell dinner. The next day, disembark and fly from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires to catch an overnight flight home. The National Geographic Explorer was created to stand up against polar regions and large waves encountered along the Drake Passage. Built to charge through ice and fully stabilized to keep guests comfortable in harsh conditions, the vessel boasts cabins of decent size with single, double, and triple accommodations.

Photography enthusiasts, who want to learn from and shoot pics with a National Geographic photography expert are next in line, as are active explorers, who care more about adventure than fancy cruising. On the twin ships, passengers can stay overnight in a geodesic glass igloo perched atop the observation deck. These ships are also equipped with X-Bows, offering smoother sails in rougher seas. We always recommend booking Antarctic cruises sooner rather than later. Book Celebrity with the right timing and you might find getting to Antarctica is more affordable than you thought.

The most exciting trips are those that don’t merely show you scenes of natural wonder; they immerse you, quite literally, if you opt for the moment of mad joy that is the Polar Plunge. The endless beauty and wonder of ice—enormous glaciers, icebergs, ice sheets. Also, the constantly changing light as it illuminates the vastness of this place. In the years since, Lindblad Expeditions has pioneered sustainable Antarctic journeys, often in partnership with National Geographic.

Discover life and landscapes along the world’s most beautiful waterways.

Feel the excitement build as you begin the crossing, often accompanied by seabirds like the wandering albatross and—if luck allows—a pod of killer whales or rare dolphins. Explore the world’s last great wilderness in the company of top naturalists and the most experienced polar captains in Antarctica, with more than 55 years of expedition heritage. Hike amid magnificent mountains; see huge glaciers; and observe a parade of gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap penguins. Kayak in protected waters, paddling in the Antarctic stillness as penguins swim nearby. Kids and teens will learn about this exhilarating part of the world with the National Geographic Global Explorers family program. Over 50+ years of exploring, Lindblad Expeditions’ veteran staff and the quality companionship they provide has established the company’s reputation.

Silversea: Expeditions Offer Door-to-Door Luxury on Antarctica Cruises

national geographic antarctica cruise

Travel with a diverse team of experts aboard the National Geographic Explorer, the definitive expedition ship. Watch for whales off the bow; Zodiac cruise around enormous icebergs; and hike, kayak, and even possibly cross-country ski in complete tranquility. Perhaps it’s the silence — no motor, no hubbub, just you, your paddle and the elements. Or perhaps it’s the anticipation, knowing that at any moment, something tremendous like a leopard seal, porpoising penguins or even a whale might appear. Whatever it is, there’s something sublime about departing your Antarctic expedition ship in a small, guided group to explore the crinkled coastline by kayak, skirting icebergs and islands, gazing up at glaciers and paddling into coves.

Quark is also favored by those who prefer flying over the Drake to either save time with a shorter vacay or avoid seasickness concerns. Cruisers wanting bragging rights for crossing the Antarctic Circle -- many expeditions don't venture that far south -- or to see the rare king, or even rarer, Emperor penguins. Passengers seeking a gentler-on-the-wallet experience, preferring some cruise ship comforts, but care little about private verandas or butlers. Quark’s passengers tend to be uber-active cruisers eager to camp overnight, snowshoe, go mountaineering and cross-country skiing while still traveling upscale. A&K Antarctic cruises appeal to luxury cruisers and A&K devotees who prefer all-inclusive sailings, staterooms with balconies and included pre-cruise hotel stays with sightseeing. Expect lectures, not just by scientists, but by historians and Polar Medal winners too.

Experience the wild grandeur of the White Continent in a more efficient, expedient way, via a 2-hour flight between Antarctica and Chile. Fly over the Drake Passage in both directions, or cruise it one way, to discover all of the highlights without sacrificing the extra time. Witness the spectacular beauty of Tierra del Fuego’s lakes, lush forests, soaring mountains and flora and fauna by train, via all-terrain vehicle or on horseback. Enjoy the expansive views from Garibaldi Pass and watch for sea lions and albatross along the Beagle Channel.

The ship has powerful engines that let it travel at more than 16 knots even in rough seas — several knots more than is typical for most expedition vessels. Visit Tierra del Fuego National Park, clad in dense beech forest just as much as Antarctica was millions of years ago. Savor lunch on board a private catamaran as you cruise the Channel, keeping an eye out for plump South American sea lions and sleek seabirds like the imperial cormorant. By day’s end, you’ll be comfortably on board the ship and ready to sail off to the White Continent. Discover multitudes of Antarctic wildlife including seals, whales, albatross and chinstrap, gentoo and Adelie penguins. After exploring Antarctica for five days, spend the next two days heading back to the tip of South America.

Good opportunities to explore the Falklands and South Georgia, too. The line also offers coveted sailings that include time inside the Antarctic Circle, not just out on the Peninsula. Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic reveals the beauty and wonder of the world by leading high quality, authentic and immersive travel to the world’s most remarkable and wild places. The brand offers expeditions in 120+ destinations across all seven continents for curious and discerning travelers seeking to experience the world from a new perspective.

Oceania also offers two-for-one fares on selected cruises, free roundtrip airfare, free shore trips, plus free dining and drinks- because you should absolutely drink free champagne on a luxury cruise.

I have several of these and they are perfect for a cruise. Mini iPhone Charger – this one is ideal for the Disney Parks and the ships. It packs a power punch but is small enough to carry in your purse or even your pocket. Binoculars – these are such good things to have for a cruise, particularly Alaska, but anywhere you are going to see whales and dolphins.
